Keep the head cool with a wet cloth or ice compress,and give cold water to drink. Usually this bath should notbe continued more than thirtyminutes, except under the in-structions of a nurse or a phy-sician. The temperature may beraised or lowered by adding hotor cold water. The bath should be followedimmediately by a cool shower,plunge, or hand bath, and avigorous rubbing, using greatcare to prevent a chill. LEG BATH For this bath, a vesselshould be provided deep enoughto permit the patient to stand with the water half way up on his thighs. The watermay be any temperature de-sired. Its chief purpose isto draw the blood away fromfTj the vital organs of the body,■|-~|~.and to increase the circula-tion of the blood in the ex-tremities. 508 Home and Health Among the Spartans of ancient Greece, bathing was madeobligatory by law. If the water is warm, there should be enough, at least,to cover the ankles. If it is cold, only enough should beused to wet the feet. Whether warm or cold water isused, the feet should be rubbed vigorously. WET GIBDLE Take a coarse piece oftoweling or linen or cottoncloth about three yardslong. Dip one-half of itin cold water, and so wrapit about the body that twothicknesses will pass overthe abdomen. Pin thiscloth securely, and coverwith a woolen wrap, beingcareful that all the wetedges are well covered soas not to wet the patientsThis is harmless, a potent remedy for many ills. COMPRESSES
