Cynar Rye Smash
I took this photograph specifically for a cocktail app for which I’m performing some beta testing (@barnotes). Typically I am not a creator, I’m a customer, but I felt that this was a very good cause to come up with anything new, although – or at least new to me. I couldn’t find any reference to a recipe comparable to this on-line so I will pretend I am the first.
This cocktail grew out of my love for the wonderful mixture of Wild Turkey Rye and Cynar. I’ve paired Cynar with every other rye that has graced my property and none meshes with its bitter medicinal attributes like the Wild Turkey does. For that reason I should exclaim at the outset that there are to be NO SUBSTITUTIONS.
… okay, substitute all you want, I will by no means know.
Cynar Rye Smash
3 chunks lemon (lower a lemon in half, then quarter one of those halves. Now you have four chunks)
5 or so large spearmint leaves
just shy of 1tbsp easy syrup
– mix in a shaker tin and muddle
1.5oz Wild Turkey Rye
– pour these into the shaker, include ice, shake heartily
– double strain (hawthorne and tea strainers) above ice in a cold rocks glass
– garnish with mint if you are that kind of man or woman
So. Nothing at all earth-shattering here, just a minor variation on a traditional, but I’m partial to it because it hits (for me) the magic stability of sweet + sour + bitter. The Cynar adds the bitterness that I uncover lacking in a standard whiskey smash, but then yet again I love the bitter stuff.
recipe for a temporary remedy:
3x Kaluha + 3x creme de framboise + 4x Baileys
gradually pour 1 after another into a tumbler filled with ice then stir and be amazed
